Dr. Sangwon Suh – Chief Scientist
Dr. Suh obtained his Ph.D. (cum laude) in Industrial Ecology at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He brings to this project his 20 years of experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) along with carbon and water footprinting. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and 3 books in the field of LCA and environmental science and management. According to the Google Scholar Citation®, his works have been cited over 10,000 times.
Dr. Suh developed the Comprehensive Environmental Data Archive (CEDA®) in 2000 and has overseen its evolution since then. Dr. Suh was appointed as a Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) WG III for its latest, 5th Assessment Report. Dr. Suh has been a member of the International Resource Panel (IRP) by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) since 2010.
He has been an associate editor of the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment since 2003. Dr. Suh co-authored the international standard on carbon footprint (GHG protocol) as a member of the working group organized by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Over the last 10 years, Dr. Suh has provided technical advice and consultation to various organizations including Fortune 500 companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), federal, state, and local governments.
Kathy Tejano Rhoads – Principal Consultant
Kathy has over eight years of consulting experience creating, launching, and managing innovative data management and sustainability solutions for domestic and international corporate clients. At VitalMetrics Group (Industrial Ecology Research Services LLC), she specializes in data collection, environmental footprinting, carbon accounting, life cycle assessment, supply chain analytics, reporting, and sustainability strategy development.
She holds a M.S. in Environmental Science and Management from the Bren School at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she specialized in energy and climate change, corporate environmental management, and eco-entrepreneurship. As part of her thesis project, she managed a team which developed and applied a water risk analysis framework to identify insulin suppliers in water-stressed regions for Eli Lilly and Kaiser Permanente. Kathy also holds a B.S. in Systems and Information Engineering and minor in Economics from the University of Virginia.
Prior to joining VitalMetrics, Kathy worked on corporate sustainability reporting and communications, served as a Climate Corp Fellow for the Environmental Defense Fund, worked at a solar energy start-up, and implemented database software solutions for Fortune 500 companies as part of IBM's Global Business Services division.
Summer S. Broeckx-Smith, LEED GA – Data Analyst
Summer supports sustainability impact assessment efforts at VitalMetrics using data analytics and life cycle assessment principles, such as IO-LCA, supply chain emissions quantification, and accounting of carbon and energy footprints. An accredited Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED v4) Green Associate, she has a working knowledge of green buildings; ASHRAE Standards 52.2, 55, 62.1, and 90.1; and ASHRAE Level I and Level II energy audits; as well as experience working on a LEED O+M Existing Buildings certification project.
Most recently, Summer revised the CEDA database for version 5.05 and participated in a spend analysis project for the State of California Department of General Services’ Procurement Division. Previously, Summer was an intern with VitalMetrics as a Greenhouse Gas Reporting Analyst, specializing in Scope 3 emissions reporting, and also interned with Green Seal on their Green Lodging Program for the City of Los Angeles.
Summer holds a Master of Environmental Science & Management from the Bren School at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she specialized in energy and climate with a focus in eco-entrepreneurship. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Stony Brook University.
Whitney Reyes – Project Associate
Whitney provides project support at VitalMetrics through data collection, report writing, and marketing content creation. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in Environmental Science and Management from the Bren School at the University of California, Santa Barbara. At Bren, she specializes in energy and climate with a focus on strategic environmental communications. Her master's thesis group project investigates the environmental impacts and benefits of combining solar photovoltaic systems with utility-scale battery storage in California.
Prior to VitalMetrics, Whitney worked on a quantitative sustainable development project in New Zealand and for a residential solar company in San Francisco. She holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and a minor in Spanish from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Rowena Eng, LEED GA – Project Associate
Rowena assists with updating the CEDA database, expanding marketing efforts, and providing other project support. She is currently finishing her Master in Environmental Science and Management degree at UC Santa Barbara’s Bren School with specializations in corporate environmental management and strategic communications. She also holds a B.S. in Marine Sciences from Stony Brook University.
At UC Santa Barbara, Rowena is involved with running the Net Impact Chapter, serving on The Green Initiative Fund Committee, and managing her master’s group project on developing a next-generation water action plan for a Fortune 500 tech company. Prior to joining VitalMetrics, Rowena worked on the TomKat UC Carbon Neutrality Project to research and develop strategies in phasing out natural gas consumption on campuses. She also has over five years of experience working in the healthcare sector, including roles in performing laboratory research, managing clinical trials, and advancing healthcare sustainability.
